Fall 2018 Newsletter


Time again for our fall newsletter. What has been happening since our last newsletter? Well, to start with, there was the yearly luncheon in June honoring the Phoenix High School students of 50 years ago, as well as 60 and 70 years ago. Here is a brief rundown of the days events.

The day started at 10:00 AM with a couple of hours of visiting and getting reacquainted with old friends. Following a delicious buffet lunch we had our meeting. Our president Sharla introduced the board as well as Brent Barry, Phoenix/Talent School District Superintendent, and Don Rugraff PHS Principal who spoke a few words. An election was held for Secretary and Treasurer. Julie Hague-Gray is our new Secretary and Darlene Flagg Ditsworth is our new Treasurer.

Ron Williams, our Scholarship Chair, introduced the 8 scholarship recipients and they each told us a little of themselves and their plans for the future. They included: Troy Altunel, Miguel Ceron, Amna Hoorain, Cedrus King, Jesus Ledezma, Maria Mena, Andrea Orozco, and Cadence Rochlen.

The 50 year honored students also passed the microphone and told us of their lives since leaving high school. It is always so interesting to see how their lives went in so many different directions following high school. The honorees included: Cathy Nelson Asher; Stephen Barlow; Kenneth Boettcher; Philip Brown; Doug Day; Sharon Scott Dow; Jim Hadath; Lloyd Hood; Randy Howell; Judy Costelow Jackson; Sue Cooper Jacobs;
Steve McNeal; Christine Miller; Ruth Watson Reynolds; Alan Rombach; Linda Gleim Rombach; Cynthia Simpson; Matt Skundrick; Mary Westfall Troxel; Elvis Webb.

We had a 50/50 drawing which Don Rugraff won. The total was $462 with his share being $231, which he donated back to the Association. Thanks Don! The raffle for the one week timeshare vacation we had been running for several months was also drawn with Celia Johnson (Talent Middle School Teacher) being the winner.

The luncheon this year was quite a success with about 79 people in attendance and the Rogue Valley Manor did an excellent job to make the day quite enjoyable.

The Friday evening get-together at Centennial Golf Course was also a lot of fun time. We had 98 people participating and even the weather co-operated. A 50/50 drawing we held with Clover Branscum Leonard the winner. She donated her half back to the Association. Thanks Clover!

SAVE THE DATE: The Alumni weekend for next year will be June 28—29, 2019.
Friday evening, June 28th will be the get-together at Centennial Golf Course and
Saturday, June 29th will be the Alumni Luncheon / meeting at the Rogue Valley Manor.
Next year (2019) we will be honoring the classes of 1969, 1959, 1949, etc.
Make your plans to attend early.

What has the fundraising committee and board been doing lately???
We now have a Facebook page, check it out!

In October the Association participated in the Homecoming Parade, Tailgate party, and Homecoming game. It was all a great success. Oct. 31st the Association participated in the Halloween party at the High School by doing a “Cupcake Walk.”

December 1st at 5:00pm will be the Annual Scholarship Auction which will be held at the High School. The fundraising committee has been working feverishly to put this together and have mountains of items to auction.

There is also another raffle taking place for a week long vacation! Tickets are available at $30.00 for one and $50.00 for two (only 200 tickets will be sold). The drawing will be held at the auction on December 1st. Read more here.

We are still looking for a few (or lot) of people to join the board and share in the fun of raising money for our scholarship recipients. Wouldn’t it be great to help even more students. You don’t even have to live in Southern Oregon to be involved. With email and the internet, you could live almost anywhere.

The positions we are looking to fill are:

  • a Historian (updating scrapbooks, photo albums, etc.);
  • Directory maintenance person (maintaining the database and sending it to the printer);
  • Grant writer (if we can get grants we might be able
    to make more money for the students).
